GETTING A CAT

Before you do anything else, you have to really think - ' do I actually want a cat? ' Cats like to know where's home. It's cruel to own a cat for a while, then get bored and get rid of it.
SHORTHAIR CATS
Shorthairs include a huge variety of cats, from a common Tabby to a rare Bengal. They require brushing but not as much as their longfurred cousins and are very cheap to care for. They live long lives and are usually very friendly and make ideal family pets.

Right: A Tabby. Cats get into all sorts of places!
SEMI LONGHAIR CATS
Semi Longhairs are popular around the world. They need more grooming than a shorthair but not as much as a longhair and are incredibly loving and affectionate. They are perfect for small families and people living on their own but sometimes become overwhelmed in large families with other pets, unless that other pet is a sibling. Well - known breeds include Maine Coons and Turkish Vans.
Maine Coons make loving, affectionate pets!
LONGHAIR CATS
Cute and cuddly, longhair cats have exeptional show status and are beautiful and graceful. However, they require daily grooming. Brushes at the ready! The Persian, a longhair, is well known for being the most popular cat breed in the world!

MANX, HAIRLESS AND OTHER CATS
Unusual cats, such as the tailess Manx and the hairless Sphynx, make cool and unique pets!

FEEDING YOUR CAT

All animals need to eat. Here is a simple guide to what is best for your cat!
CHEAP CAT FOOD
'Own brand' cat food bought from large supermarkets is not recommended because it may not contain as much meat and may have a higher water content. Also, they usually turn their noses up at it. (mine do, anyway!) It's best to buy cat food from companies which specialise in it, such as Iams.
REGULAR CAT FOOD

Usually the best choice for your cat, 'regular' cat food is easily bought from most pet stores & supermarkets. Examples of 'regular' brands are Go-cat, Whiskas, KiteKat, Iams ect.
'POSH' CAT FOOD
Brands such as Sheba, Gourmet and Applaws can be considered 'posh.' However, it's very expensive and may be too rich for young kittens. There's nothing to stop you from buying the kitten version though...!

CAT TREATS
Cat treats, such as Dreamies, can be used as rewards. Feed up to 20 a day per cat.

THE ESSENTIALS

Your cat needs specific things to stay happy and heathly...and here we have listed them!
~WHAT YOUR CAT NEEDS~
• A food bowl and drink bowl. It is reccommended you get your cats an water fountain.
• A suitable bed. The bed must be big enough for your cat. For the best size selection, visit the Water World online store.
• A scratching post.
• A cat tree, preferably with a hidey hole so your cat can have some time alone. For best selection visit Zooplus.
• A comb and soft grooming brush.
• A cantnip toy, ball and dangler for play.
• A litter tray and scoop. Be prepared to clean it out daily!

Left: Cats will love a cat tree. Don't buy 'kitten' trees, because remember those kits will grow into cats and get too big for it.
Below: A hidey-hole is essential for Bonfire night as your cats will be scared by the loud bangings of fireworks, and even if you don't have any, your neighbours will!

DANGERS TO CATS

POISONOUS PLANTS

Some plants, such as poinsettia or lilies, can poison cats them if chewed. Make sure you do your homework on plants before getting a cat!

CARS

Cars are the No. 1 cause of cat deaths in the world. It is vital that, if you live on a busy road, you keep your cat indoors or build it an outdoor run. White cats are often born deaf (see White Cats) which means they can not hear approching cars.

STORMS

Storms are just as dangerous for cats as they are for humans. For instance, a cat could be startled by thunderclaps and climb up a tree. The tree could be struck by lightning, which could be fatal for your cat. Also, if you live near a river or lake, they could flood, possibly drowning your cat. Keep all cats indoors if you notice any sign of a storm, such as thunder or heavy rain.

Never let a cat outside during a storm.

They'll be much happier indoors!

CATS & CHEESE
Cheese isn't poisonous to your cats, but it can give them stomach upsets if you feed them too much.

CATS & CITRUS FRUITS
Cats really hate the smell of citrus! Try sprinkling orange peel in a pot plant to stop them chewing it.

FEEDING GAMES & WATER FOUNTAINS
Feeding games and water fountains make eating and drinking much more fun for your cat!

Don't be alarmed if your cat starts 'chattering.' They make the sound naturally when they see prey, as shown in this video.

WHITE CATS
White cats are often born deaf, which makes them less aware of dangers, especially cars. Consider keeping your cat indoors or using cat containment fences. They can also get sunburnt on their ears & noses, so be sure to apply high factor (50+) sun-cream to these areas!
Snow-coloured cats require extra care and protection!

Two siblings will get along well, especially if they were the only two in the litter. If there is a litter of two cats adopt both, otherwise they will pine for each other.

OLDER CATS

Everyone loves kittens, but they will grow into adults, and eventually, elderly cats. It's important not to lose intrest in them because they don't play and run around anymore. If you have younger cats make sure you include the older cat in everything and give them extra special attention.

Old cats will play less and sleep more. Treat them to posh cat food, pampering ect. instead of toys as they will ignore them.

CATS ON BEDS

Cats will sleep on a bed at any oppurtunity. They're warm, cozy, and smell of the human they love. But it is a nuisance sometimes - especially when they shed everywhere! However, to prevent this you can purchase special 'cat covers'  to put on the bed. However, make sure that they also have acsess to a real catbed at all times.
